Did you know …?

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» was the first junior college in Texas to incorporate the word “community” in its name.

In the late 1960s, Chester Hastings, the first dean of instruction at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³», suggested a Scottish Highlander for Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»’s mascot to commemorate the early Scot founder of McLennan County, Neil McLennan. In the mid-2000s, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» students voted to name the Highlander, Mac.

Campus History

In September 1966, the newly established Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» welcomed 855 students to its temporary location at the James Connally Air Force Base, the current location of Texas State Technical College (TSTC). Earlier that year, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» purchased a historic property previously owned by Waco lumber magnate William Cameron. This lush and tranquil land has a rich history dating back to the Huaco (pronounced like the city “Waco”) Indians.

In January 1970, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» hosted its grand opening at its permanent location here in northwest Waco on the former Cameron estate.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» also owns Highlander Ranch, at 196-acre horse farm located about 5 miles from campus. We also invite you our Emergency Services Education Center, a 43-acre educational complex near the Waco Regional Airport, which houses academic programs like criminal justice, fire protection, law enforcement, and paramedicine.
